Our History

Building Strong Ties

Fort Drum became home to the reactivated 10th Mountain Division in 1985, bringing significant changes to the Northern New York region. In response, community leaders formed the Fort Drum Steering Council to support military integration and development. Funded by the Department of Defense and local agencies, this council served as a vital bridge between military and civilian communities until its planned dissolution in 1990.

The Formation of Advocate Drum

Recognizing the ongoing need for military-community collaboration, Advocate Drum was established. This permanent organization continues the legacy of advocacy and support, ensuring Fort Drum remains a strong economic and strategic asset for the region.

Adapting to New Challenges

As Fort Drum’s role evolved, Advocate Drum expanded its efforts to address regional priorities. From housing advocacy and workforce development to infrastructure improvements and economic initiatives, we work with government agencies, businesses, and community partners to create sustainable solutions.

Quality housing for military families is essential. Advocate Drum has played a key role in securing funding and resources for improved residential options and infrastructure, ensuring Fort Drum remains a desirable place to live and work.

Through grant-supported initiatives and strategic partnerships, Advocate Drum has helped drive regional economic growth. The Drum Country NY marketing campaign highlights the area’s strengths, attracting businesses and talent to the region.
